Who Is Shiva's Father?

The question of who is Shiva’s father remains one of the most frequently asked questions by people worldwide. Honored as the supreme power, he is often depicted with a third eye on his forehead, symbolizing knowledge and cosmic power. According to the stories from the ancient Puranas, it is believed that Lord Brahma, who is the creator of the entire universe, is the father of Lord Shiva. Shiva followers must know that Shiva was not born through biological means, but rather through the cosmic forces that came together to bring the supreme deity into this universe. As per the ancient stories, Lord Shiva was born through a cosmic egg, Hiranyagarbha, which is believed to be the primeval stage of the universe. Both Brahma and Vishnu also originated and were introduced to the world in the same way.

This legend strengthens the belief that Shiva is self-made without biological parents, strengthening his position as a timeless force that controls the universe.

Unlike other deities, Shiva was not born through natural means. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is eternal and self-manifested. His existence was born in isolation, and it is believed that Shiva would exist even post the demise of the universe as well. As per the ancient stories, once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu argued about who was more impressive. Suddenly, a column of fire appeared, and both the tree’s base and its crown were obscured, but the two deities managed to pick up on a prophet’s words.

Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upwards, while Vishnu transformed into a boar and dug deep below to find its end, but neither of them succeeded. Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu came back to face reality and saw that Lord Shiva was waiting for them. They realized there is another power besides themselves governing the cosmos, and it was none other than Lord Shiva.

Jalandhar Shiva

Jalandhar is a powerful demon king as mentioned in Padma Purana, Shiva Purana, and Skanda Purana. The fire took form and gave birth to Jalandhar, a being of immense power. Due to his divine origin, Jalandhar Shiva was nearly invincible and waged war against the gods. He grew so powerful that even Indra, the king of gods, feared him. But, despite his strength, he was ultimately defeated by Shiva himself. The story of Jalandhar highlights an important lesson: power alone does not make one divine; it’s the right approach that matters.

The Shiva beautifully describes the stories dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it illustrates Jalandhar’s origin through powerful Sanskrit verses. It is depicted in the tales that Jalandhar emerged from the cosmic fire that sprang from Shiva’s third eye (known as the “Trinetra”).
