Matsya came into existence during the great flood of Pralaya to save the sacred scriptures, the Vedas (knowledge), and humanity. Matsya helped King Manu and protected life and humanity, as Manu is considered the father of all humans. Matsya can be pictured either as a gigantic fish or, more anthropomorphically. It also has a human torso joined to a fish’s tail. Today, the Matsya avatar is considered the symbol of protection and salvation and represents the cyclical nature of existence.
2. Kurma (The Tortoise)
In the second avatar, Lord Vishnu became Kurma, a giant tortoise, to help the gods (Devas) and demons (Danavs) churn the ocean or Samudra Manthan and get the Amrit. 4. Narasimha (The Man-Lion)
The fourth avatar out of 10 avatars of Vishnu, Narasimha, is the most interesting and powerful form of Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared as a half-man, half-lion to defeat the demon Hiranyakashyap, who had a boon of almost immortality. With his cleverness, Narasimha bypassed all the boon conditions of the demon and saved his devotee, Prahlada, and restored Dharma. The ancient story of Narasimha, who was known among his devotees for breaking a pillar to raise Prahlad in his arms is an influential imagery. Today, he is worshipped as the god who protects his devotees from all kinds.
5. Vamana (The Dwarf)
With the Vamana avatar, Vishnu teaches a lesson of humbleness to Raja Bali. In the form of a dwarf Brahmin, Vamana requested three steps of land from Bali and then measured the entire universe in two steps, nothing for the third, and placed his third step on Bali’s head to break his attitude.
With the first, Vamana descended to Earth, and with the second step, he reached the Underworld. When King Mahabali could no longer fulfil his promise, he surrendered his head to appease the gods. Vamana then put his foot down, granting him eternal life as a reward for his modesty.
6. Parashurama (The Warrior Sage)
Parashurama, the sixth avatar out of 10 avatars of Vishnu, was a powerful warrior with a Parshu(axe) offered by Shiva. He was born to make the world free from corrupt Kshatriya rulers and restore Dharma. As per Hindu mythology, he was the first Brahmin and Kshatriya (a warrior-saint) to share the responsibilities of both castes. The father of Parashurama fed King Kartavirya Arjuna and his army with the celestial cow Kamadhenu when he later visited the saint in his ashram. Jamadagni denied the king’s request for the cow, due to which, the king seized and leveled the ashram. Later, the king was assassinated in his palace, and Parashurama single-handedly defeated his army.
Later the sons of Kartavirya took their revenge on Jamadagni and killed him. It is believed that Parashurama swore vengeance on every Kshatriya on the planet twenty-one times, and his blood filled five lakes. His grandfather, rishi Rucheeka, finally made an appearance and forced him to stop. Many devotees believe that Parashuram is still alive and doing penance on Mahendragiri mountain despite being an immortal Chiranjivi.
7. Rama (The Ideal King)
Vishnu takes his seventh incarnation as Rama. With a human-like avatar and a life with principles, Rama kills the demon Ravana to protect humanity. With this AvatarVishnu presents an exemplary figure for human beings to be like that. Ravana was the demon king of Sri Lanka, who kidnapped Rama’s wife, Sita. Sita was also the daughter of King Janaka. Rama killed Ravana when he was exiled from his own country for 14 years. He was the prince of the Raghuvamsa-Suryavamsha dynasty who ruled the Shakya Republic but gave it all up and lived life as a hermit. 10. Kalki (The Future Warrior)
The final avatar, Kalki in the 10 avatars of Vishnu, doesn’t happen till, and it is believed that it will descend in the future during the age of complete darkness or Ghor Kali Yuga.
